Weekend August 29th-31th

Last weekend of the summer ends with a fine rhythm towards the autumn, surpassing last week gross of 8,8M€, and setting a 50% higher than last year numbers. The solidity of the current weekend is given by a combination of powerful new releases and stable adult and familiar movies.

This week's number one has gone red. A bright red, almost diabolic, still very funny. Hellboy. The Golden Army has surpassed 2M€ (2,97M$) in 400 sites, which make an average of 5.150€ (7.570$) for screen.

Universal did not expand and oversize the release beyond 400 copies, learning from the cold reception of The Dark Knight. Smartly, the major focused on this number of copies to push them without excess, clearly looking for its target core: teen-agers and fantastic fans.

This release is heavily different from the first Hellboy, both in the dating (less competitors are showing in September) and in the power of the director, Del Toro, with a fresh success in its pocket (Pan's Labyrinth) which enlarge the movie target to more adult people (35-40 years old).

For now, the final forecast should be of 5,8-6,3M€ (8,5-9,2M$), which is 62-67% better than the first release.

Hellboy. The Golden Army has been detrimental to other teen-targeted movies such as Zohan, The Dark Knight (both falling more than 40%) and the new Star Wars. The Clone Wars, which falls short of results.

Zohan sums 1.09M€ (1.6M$) this week, a fine gross for last week's surprise, cumulating 4.33M€ (6.3M$) so far, which makes this movie Sandler's second most remunerative release in Spain, after Anger Managment, which will soon be surpassed. The final forecast is 6M€ (8.82M$).

The Dark Knight falls 44%, cumulating 9.4M€ (13.8M$).

Los girasoles ciegos (The Blind Sunflowers) has been the most important Spanish release during the last months, fulfilling the expectations and reaching the fifth position in the box office with 650’000€ (955’500$) in 192 sites only, obtaining the second best average of the week, 3.390€ (4.976$).

No doubt these numbers confirm the charm of the proposal: actors, director and novel, which is why the movie was strongly promoted, with a strong publicity in TV programs, radio, press and magazines.

The movie runs for a final gross of 2’5M€ (3’6M$), which would make it the fourth best release of the year so far.

The other five new releases of the week were poor, none of them with an average beyond 2.000€.

The only outstanding one has been Hace mucho que te quiero (I’ve loved you so much), obtaining 72.000€ (105’840$) in 38 sites, with a good average of 1.921€ (2’785$). A proper gross similar to other dramas released in the past in only a few screens.

I have long suspected that some of the people who voted for Donald Trump thought it would be funny to put a doofus in the White House.

Haven't seen The Dark Knight, but isn't Howard Stern still on the air somewhere? For years, his show promoted this brand of juvenile smart-assery.
